After a really tricky summer weather-wise, we finally finished the harvest at Overtown Farm on 2nd October, the latest harvest in memory for us and the first year we have been to Harvest Festivals and Harvest Home parties before a single field was combined!
The ploughing is well under way now ready for the next crop. This will be Triticale, a Wheat, Rye hybrid for animal feed. The ploughed land has been rolled and will be power harrowed to break it down into a finer tilth and then the drill will come in to plant the seed.
We have already had a slight frost this week and the grass growth has really slowed down so the cows and calves in the fields opposite the farm are now being fed hay to supplement what they get from grazing. Although the weather has been bright, the view across the ploughed land, over the rest of the farm to the beechwoods and May Hill beyond is looking very autumnal!
