PARISH SKIPS

Unfortunately this popular SDC funded service, which has enabled householders to dispose of non-hazardous waste will have to cease at the end of March. This is because the County Council, as waste disposal authority, is no longer prepared to accept the waste from the skips as it cannot be regulated and may therefore breach disposal site licence conditions.

Whilst other options are being explored it is worth highlighting that this Council provides a substantial waste recycling service, which has developed considerably since the parish skip service was introduced. To encourage householders to treat waste as resource rather than something to be thrown away the following services are provided:-

•  ‘Door to Door’ collections of paper, glass, mixed cans, tin foil, plastic bottles and household batteries (from April)
•  Recycling facilities at 39 locations around the District that accept the materials mentioned above. Some of these sites also accept books, clothes, cardboard and videos
•  ‘Door to Door’ collection of household furniture such as suites, fridges and cookers. Many of these items are either recycled or re-used
•  Subsidised compost bins - SDC has created several outlets from which to purchase these bins at very affordable prices
•  Collection system for DIY waste - chargeable

Recycling of used ink cartridges and mobile phones is encouraged through partnerships with other organisations and support of the 'Get It Sorted' campaign.
